Editor's choicePopular  Security Has It's Ups and Downs
By Frank Fourchalk

Other than getting stuck, what possibly could go wrong in an elevator? This type of logic doesn't surprise me since most people have been travelling horizontally for years without a hitch.

So why should we all of a sudden be concerned about elevator travel? The answer is obvious, thieves, robbers and muggers also use elevators. Often volatile, these losers are hell bent on getting what they want when they want. Even it means leaving an innocent victim behind to fill out the police report.

Let's think about the ramifications of elevator travel. It's a confined space you are willing to climb into with a complete stranger. I don't know of any other scenario where we are so quick to throw caution to the wind.

So before your hurried lifestyle finds you jeopardizing your safety, think about the precautions you should be taking. Precautions like not getting into the elevator without checking out who already occupies it.

If somebody looks suspicious, don't get in. It only takes a few seconds to catch the next car. And if you are already in the elevator and experience a suspicious person entering, trust your instincts and get off.

When waiting to board, always stand away from the elevator door to avoid being pushed or pulled inside. Once inside make sure you stand near the control panel. This way if someone begins to harass or threaten you, you can push all of the control buttons which will cause the elevator to make several stops. This will now allow you many attempts to exit as the elevator stops at each floor.

Many elevators have telephones mounted inside. They are often a direct line to the elevator service company. These phones are also available in the event of an emergency. There's usually a plaque near the phone with the address of the building for easy reference.

Hands on personal protection is another good consideration, especially if you do a lot of elevator travel. Lets face it, being confined in a tight space with no means of escape from one floor to the next warrants personal protection.
This is why it's a good idea to purchase some type of hands-on personal protection device. This may include a small shrill alarm for your pocket, purse or briefcase.

Often people will have their personal protection device in their hand before entering into the elevator. When waiting for an elevator car, stand off to the side. This will afford you the opportunity to view inside and remove your obligation to board.

Always check the corridor of your destination floor for suspicious activity before exiting. And remember if someone does try to rob you, give up your property and report the crime to police as soon as you are safe.

Never doubt your instincts. If you have a creepy feeling about a person, that's because there's usually a reason. Our bodies have ways of sensing danger. If you've ever been accosted or attacked, you will certainly understand the advantage of being pro-active when it comes to elevator travel.
